Beni Ghreb is an SME specializing in the packaging and export of organically grown dates. It is located in the Hazoua oasis in southern Tunisia, close to the border with Algeria. Beni Ghreb was founded by a family of farmers and was the first company in Tunisia to export organic dates. Following financial difficulties, notably linked to COVID, SIDI decided to acquire a stake in the company in order to contribute to its recovery.
Tunisia was the first country in the ‘Arab Spring’ to set in motion a process of peaceful democratisation, which has gradually withered in recent years, culminating in the election of an authoritarian, populist and conservative President who has suspended the gains of the revolution. The country has no great natural resources and lives off tourism and remittances from a diaspora that has gone into exile in Europe in recent years.
BeniGhreb has developed an irrigation system that saves up to 80% of the water resources of the plots in this desert oasis, and specialises in biodynamic date production (DEMETER certification). Their compost is produced from a plot of native desert plants that they have reforested for this purpose by recovering waste water.
