Enda Tamweel is a Tunisian micro-finance company created by the non-governmental organization Enda inter-arabe, a pioneer of the micro-finance sector in Tunisia. Enda Tamweel promotes the financial inclusion of vulnerable populations, particularly women and young people. Enda Tamweel’s development is based on proximity, and it operates through a network of 108 branches covering all the Tunisian governorates, and 5 mobile counters serving mainly remote areas.
Tunisia was the first country in the ‘Arab Spring’ to set in motion a process of peaceful democratisation, which has gradually withered in recent years, culminating in the election of an authoritarian, populist and conservative President who has suspended the gains of the revolution. The country has no major natural resources and lives off tourism and remittances from a diaspora that has gone into exile in Europe in recent years.
ENDA Tamweel represents 80% of the microfinance market. It charges the lowest rates on the market, with low average loans. Since its creation, Enda has supported more than one million and one hundred thousand people and has granted more than 4.4 million loans for an amount equivalent to 9,400 million dinars. ENDA primarily targets women and young people in rural areas.
