KRK is a high-impact institution at the heart of SIDI’s target. It targets vulnerable people with no bank guarantee. Rural areas account for 60% of the portfolio. 20% of borrowers are women. Its social impact has now been highlighted by an impact study carried out by CERISE and MSC.
Kosovo is a disputed territory in southern Europe, in the Balkans (in the former Yugoslavia). Its declaration of independence in 2008, contested by Serbia (supported by its Russian and Chinese allies) after a bloody war between Serbian forces and Albanian independence fighters, is not recognised today by either the UN or the EU. Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe, with 70% under the age of 35. Over 30% of its population is unemployed. Kosovo is a fragile country with a high political risk due to the conflict with Serbia.
KrK is an impact institution in SIDI’s core target area. It is the leading institution in rural areas (60% of the portfolio). Its portfolio among rural populations and young people is growing steadily. SIDI is Krk’s third largest shareholder and was involved in its creation. Krk is a long-standing partner of SIDI, which has supported it through its various crises. It has become a model that can also benefit other MFIs. SIDI has regularly played a leading role in social and environmental issues. The latest example is the social and environmental impact study conducted by CERISE and MSC, with support from SIDI and the Grameen Foundation.
